BE THANKFUL

By Kimber Bailey Scott
Luke 15:3-7; 17:11-19; 19:29-38, 22:7-19

SING:

Thank You, God (tune: if you’re happy and you know it)

Thank You, God for Jesus who loves us. (clap clap clap) 2x
Thank You, God for Jesus. Thank You, God for Jesus.
Thank You, God for Jesus who loves us. (clap clap clap)

Thank You, God for people who love us. (stomp stomp stomp) 2x
Thank You, God for people. Thank You, God for people.
Thank You, God for people who love us. (stomp stomp stomp)

Thank You, God for food, good food. (Amen!) 2x
Thank You, God for food. Thank You, God for food.
Thank You, God for food, good food. (Amen!)

RHYME:

We Thank God

We thank God (fold hands) for Jesus,
Who loves us (hug self), it is true.
We thank God (fold hands) for people,
Who love (hug self) both me and you (point to self & another)
We thank God (fold hands) for good food,
That we can chew and chew and chew (pretend to chew)
We thank God (fold hands) for all these things (spread out arms).
We say thanks to You! (say together, “Thank You, God!”)

LESSON:

Before class, make 10 stick men.

The Bible tells us about 10 (hand one or two to each child and count them as you’re handing them out) men who were sick with leprosy. That means they had sores all over their bodies. Can you show me the 10 (count them) men who were sick with leprosy? (ask them to hold up the sick men) This sickness made the men feel band and sad. They hurt and they had to stay away from other people so they did not pass the sickness to someone else. No one wanted to be sick with leprosy.

One day Jesus was walking near where the 10 (count them) sick men lived. They called out “Jesus, please make us well!” Jesus said “Go show the priest. You are well.”

The men began to walk to the priest. Can you make your men walk?
When the men had gone a little way, they felt different. They looked at themselves. They were well! All 10 (count them) men were well! Turn your men around so we can see the well men. They were so happy. Maybe they jumped up and down for joy. Can you make your men jump? Then 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 of them went on to show themselves to the priest. Let’s count to 9.

May I borrow your man, ______? (hold up the man so the children see the well side) But one man (ask them to count to one) had something special to do. Do you know what it was? Yes, he went back to say thank You to Jesus for making him well. (return the man to the child)

APPLY:

How many men remembered to say thank You? Can you imagine that! Just one man remembered to say thank You to Jesus! Do you think that man made Jesus happy?

Which of the 10 men do you want to be like? I want to be like the one man (count to one) not the nine men (count to nine). Jesus likes for us to say thank You to Him.

Who else should we thank? (parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, etc.) Saying thank you to these people makes them happy too!

MEMORY VERSE:

Does God want you to be thankful? What are you thankful for? Does God want you to say “thank you”?

The Bible tells us that God hears us when we pray to Him. The Bible says, “We…thank God.” Can you say those words with me? Say them louder.

Give each one a Bible (or share) & ask each to say “We…thank God.” 2 Thessalonians 1:3

ART:

Let each child decorate the front of a folded piece of construction paper using stickers and crayons.

If you will tell me what to write, I will write a thank you message for you to give to someone.

Give children ideas of whom they could write a message to. Have them put cards into envelopes and you can write a name on the outside.

SNACK:

Show the kids good manners and times they can say thank you to others.

Let me show you how to pass a tray of apples (do so). When someone passes you the cookies, you say “Thank you.” Now let’s pass a plate of bananas (do so), what should you say? That’s right! THANK YOU! Can you pass the napkins (do so)? (the ones that are saying thank you, praise them greatly)

If mommy makes you a sandwich, what do you say to her?
If daddy helps you get out of the car, what do you say to him?
If your teacher gives you a snack, what do you say?

Jesus likes for us to say thank you to people when they do something nice for us.

GAME:

Before class, put several nature items into a basket. Ask kids to sit in a circle. Remove one item at a time from the basket and ask children what the items is. Have them pass it around the circle and carefully look at it. As they do, sing these words to the tune of “row, row, row you boat.” Repeat the song for each item. Encourage children to sing too.

Thank You, thank You, God
Thank You, thank You, God

Thank You, thank You, God.

JESUS LOVES ME

By Kimber Bailey Scott

OPEN:

Have an animal puppet and give it a name. Pull this puppet out of your “magic bag.”

This is _____. He likes to snuggle and sniff his friends. (do this to some of the kids with the puppet) He likes to have his ears scratched and be petted. Can you scratch his ears and pet him? (talk to the puppet) I’m glad you’re one of our friends in class. (put the puppet back in your “magic bag”)

SNACK:

We’re going on a pretend trip today. The children and their families in our Bible story went to see Jesus. Jesus loved the children. He wanted them to come to Him. Let’s pretend that we are going to see Jesus. Let’s make a lunch to take.
(choose simple cookie cutters that fit a slice of bread.)

Let’s cut out your bread & cheese. (Show children how to place bread and cheese on paper plates to cut with the cutters and make sandwiches. Now give each one a lunch sack, a plastic Ziploc bag & put the sandwich in it.)

LESSON:

Comb your hair. Don’t forget the blanket, said mother. The children, moms, dads and families were excited as they started out on a trip to see their special friend. (walk around your room) Let’s walk along the road like the children and families in the Bible did. Do you see any birds? (look up) The children may have skipped and hopped. (Skip and hop) They may have climbed a big hill (bend as if climbing) or jumped over a puddle of water (jump).

Then they heard people talking and saw their special friend. Who do you think was their special friend? (Jesus) They may have spread out a blanket to sit on later (spread out your blanket) The moms and dads were taking their children to see Jesus. Just as they saw their friend Jesus (put a hand over eyes) one of Jesus’ helpers said “STOP! Jesus is too tired and busy for children. Don’t bother Him.”

When Jesus heard this, He said “Let the little children come to me.” Jesus touched the children. He talked to the children and held some of them in His arms. Jesus was happy to see the children. The children were happy to see Jesus.

APPLY:

(Have everyone sits on the blanket) Who were the moms and dads taking their children to see? Who talked to the children, touched them and was happy to see them? Who loves you? (mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, Jesus, etc.)

And hands (clap hands)

~Dorothy Fay Richards

LESSON:

(Open your Bible to John 4:46-54) The Bible tells us about a time when a father had a little boy who was very sick. Jesus helped the father by making his son well. Jesus said, “Your son will live!” And the son did get better right away! We are not able to help by making people well like Jesus did but we can help people in other ways.

(Open your Bible to Acts 9:36-39) the Bible tells us about a woman named Dorcas who used her hands to make clothes for lots of people. She made clothes for people who didn’t have much money. Our hands may not be able to make clothes but we can use our hands to help people too.

(Open your Bible to 2 Corinthians 8:1-5) The Bible tells us that the church friends in Macedonia sent money to help the church friends in Jerusalem. They were glad to give money to help. We may not have a lot of money but we can use the money we do have to help others.

APPLY:

Give them the circles of yellow paper (we'll call these coins) & a white piece of paper and some glue. Have them stick the coins onto their paper as you talk.

Jesus helped with words. How can we help with words? (saying kind things, telling someone you love them, etc.)

Dorcas helped with her hands. How can we help with our hands?

The church friends helped with money. How can we help with money?

ART:

Before class, write with a perm. marker “_______ can help.” Along one edge of each flannel square. Make a “Helper Doll” by holding a small rubber or plastic ball and let the child place the square over it. Fasten a rubber band around the fabric enclosing the ball as a head. Make eyes with a perm. marker.

Show the kids how to dust with a “Helper Doll.” Let them practice by dusting furniture in the classroom.

You can use your “Helper Doll” to help your mom and dad dust furniture at home. When you have helped so much that your doll is dusty; your mom or dad can put it in the washer. Helping others shows we love God. The Bible tells us to “love each other.”

ACTIVITY:

Let me show you some ways you can be helper at home and at church. God wants us to love and help others.

Demonstrate how to do chores like:
  • washing dishes (using a tub of water, washcloths, soap, plastic dishes & towels to dry them off)
  • dusting furniture (have them use their “Helper Doll”)
  • folding washcloths (have washcloths in a laundry basket)
  • washing tables (using damp washcloths or paper towels)

I LEARN ABOUT THE BIBLE

Nehemiah 8:1-12; Luke 4:14-21; 2 Timothy 1:5, 8; 2:2; 3:15; Acts 8:26-40

OPENING:

Pull out your own Bible from your “magic bag.” Begin to read from it.

Do you know what this is?
Am I suppose to read it?
Who else is suppose to read it?

LESSON:

If you were a boy or girl in Israel a long time ago, you might have been a part of a very special day. Your mother might have gotten you out of bed early in the morning. (Stretch & Yawn)

You might have hurried through breakfast (pretend to eat fast) and then you and your family would have gone to join lots of other people. Everywhere you looked, there were people. (look around with your hands over your eyes) Dads and moms, grandpas and grandmas, and boys and girls.

Look! (Put hand over eyes & point) There’s a man named Ezra. He’s standing on a high platform. He’s opening a book. What book do you think he’s opening?

Yes, he’s opening the Bible. Back then they didn’t have books but they did have scrolls like this.

Now pull out a scroll from your “magic bag.”

All the people stood up. (have kids stand) Ezra read to the people from the Bible (or scroll) all morning long. Ezra read about the wonderful things God had done for the people. And he read about how God wanted the people to live. Everyone listened. (cup your ears)

Ezra praised God and all the people said “Amen!” and bowed down to worship God. (have the kids bow) The people were happy to hear God’s word.

APPLY:

How did the people feel when they heard Ezra read from the Bible (or scroll)? Yes, they were happy. Why were they happy? They were hearing God’s words, weren’t they?

Did you ever get a letter or maybe a package in the mail? Were you happy to open it? Maybe it was a special letter from your grandma or grandpa or a friend. That’s exciting isn’t it! God has given us His special words. His words are in the Bible. (show them the Bible) What does the Bible say? When we read this exciting book, we feel happy. We learn to know God better and to love Him. The Bible says “Love the Lord your God.” (ask them to repeat that with you)

SING:

Read the Bible (tune: The farmer in the dell)
*____ read her Bible.
Yes, *____ read her Bible.
*____ reads her Bible every day.

*Insert each child’s name.
Let the child being “sung” about hold a Bible.

RHYME:

My Bible
This is my Bible; (hands held out in front with palms together like a closed book)
I’ll open it wide, (open your hands but keep them touching)
And see (or say) what is written
On the inside! (say Love The Lord Your God together)
~Jean Baxendale

PRAY:

Put a Bible in front of each child & have them hold it close to them. Ask the kids to close their eyes and bow their heads. Have them repeat after you.

Thank You, God, for giving us the Bible so that we may learn more about You and your son, Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

CRAFT:

Have the children sit in a circle on the floor.

Let’s make some big listening ears!

Use “Mr. Ryan’s ears” – pictured here or something else to make big ears on a stick or headband. OR have them already made and pull them out of your “magic bag” for each child.

I see many listening ears today. ________, can you hear with your ears?

SING:

My Best Friend is Jesus (Tune: Mary had a little lamb)
My best friend is Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
My best friend is Jesus.
Jesus loves me so (hug self)
(clap hands on Jesus)

PRAY:

Let’s pray to God today. He always listens to us. Dear God, thank you for listening to us. Thank you for our friend Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Ask several other children to also pray,

MEMORY VERSE:

When you prayed, did you God heard you?

The Bible tells us that God hears us when we pray to Him. The Bible says, “He hears us.” Can you say those words with me? Say them louder.

LESSON:

(Open your Bible.) Jesus smiled and remembered when the children sang to Him in the streets of Jerusalem.

(Hold a picture of Jesus) Hosanna! Hosanna!

Hosanna means that we are praising Jesus. Hosanna! Hosanna! The children followed their friend Jesus into the temple/church.

(Hold a picture of Jesus) Hosanna! Hosanna!

Many of the people who loved Jesus liked to hear the children sing.

(Hold a picture of Jesus) Hosanna! Hosanna!

They knew Jesus was God’s Son. Jesus smiled as the children praised Him.

(Hold a picture of Jesus) Hosanna! Hosanna! Jesus is God’s Son.

Not everyone, however, was smiling. Some men in the temple/church did not like Jesus. They did not like what the children were saying and singing.

(Hold a picture of Jesus) Hosanna! Hosanna! Jesus is God’s Son.

Jesus looked at the angry men and said, “God wants these children to praise Me.”

(Hold a picture of Jesus) Hosanna! Hosanna!

Jesus looked at the children and listened to their words.

(Hold a picture of Jesus) Hosanna! Hosanna! Jesus is God’s Son.

Jesus liked to hear His friends praise Him.

(Hold a picture of Jesus) Hosanna! Hosanna!

Do you remember that the children in the Bible story today praised Jesus? Let’s continue to sing with our mouths. (sing a song) Let’s singing it very softly. (sing it quietly) Let’s sing it LOUD! (sing it loud) Let’s sing it LOUDER! (sing it louder)

Jesus heard a happy sound when He went into the temple/church. Do you know what the sound was? Children were praising Him! Do you think He’s happy when He hears you singing to Him? (yes)

GAME:

Before class, make a hopscotch court with masking tape – one block, two blocks, one block and end with two blocks. Have the kids say the memory verse as they hop, jump, turn around and hop back. Set chairs along the hopscotch “court” for other children to watch, wait and help with the verse.

GOD – HEARS – US

You are all waiting so quietly. I like it when you take turns. Jesus liked to hear children praise Him. I know He likes to hear you say His words from the Bible too.
